Nail Polish Tracker Blanket Project: The Beginning

(All items purchased)

I learned to crochet in late 2024. It has been really fun trying new projects and stitches. I began with crochet pumpkins for Halloween decorations, then followed with other projects like toy scarves (literally) and human sized scarves.

This year, I have a yearlong project that I would like to work on. A blanket that tracks what nail colors I wore in 2025.

This will be a variation of the temperature blankets that you may see online from time to time. I wanted to track my colors in yarn form because I thought it'd be more fun than temperature (although I would love to do one or two to compare my hometown vs my new city in the future since the temperature variations are so apparent).

(featuring a future blog entry subject)

For yarn, I will be using a DK weight wool blend that is easy for me to purchase more of from when I need to replenish colors. Novita 7 Brothers comes in many colors and is usually under 4 euros (about $4.25 US) at Walmart type stores in Finland. I am also using a 4 mm hook from the same brand to start. Stitch is moss stitch, which is a mix of single crochet and chain stitches. Love moss stitch because it comes out pretty and it develops fast. Which is very helpful when you need to do about 250+ stitches at a time like I will be doing this year. For context, my rows are 250 stitches long and I would like to do 2-3 rows at a time when possible. I find doing the small blocks versus one row a day feels more satisfactory to me.

Since nail polish is not always one single color, or can be in skittle manis or multichrome, I decided to set these conditions on what color to track and yarn to select:

1) Colors are a basic crayon box: white for white, black for black, red for all shades of red but pink, pink for pink, etc. Brown is for chocolate or darker browns and tan is for "nude" colors like buff. Metallics are given the closest representation, like yellow for gold and gray for silver

2) Whatever the base color is, that is the color yarn used. Only use a shimmer to choose a yarn if the base color is clear or extremely sheer to the point that the base color barely matters (example: Lumen Glass Frog, Ethereal Lorraine)

3) If a color is color changing, go with the color that it's in in the bottle

4) If a color is multichrome, go with the dominate color or make a judgement call. For example, if I wore ILNP Eclipse, a black to red multichrome, I would choose black yarn because that is the "dominate" color to me (i.e. my main impression is that it's overall a black based special effect polish)

5) For skittle nails, or glitter finish nails that are not crelly or toppers such as Painted Polish I Like Big Beads (a clear based Mardi Gras inspired glitter topper), I am still finalizing. I may either change colors in a row to represent the colors, or employ a rainbow colored yarn that Novita also sells to represent the different colors.

6) Whatever color is on my nails when I wake up that day is what color I will track. The exception to this rule is that if I wake up with naked nails and paint them later that day, I will track the color that I applied before going to bed.

7) If I do not have any polish on my nails during the entire day, I will use a very specific pale cream color to represent my naked nails.

8) I want to indicate a divide amongst the twelve months. Current plan is to get a fingerling/lace width yarn and embroider it in between days when the time comes

This is a week's progress into my blanket. The first two rows (plus the foundation chain) are black for the manicure I started 2025 with (Kathleen and Co Glow So Bright), while the next five are for Fancy Gloss Troll Bait.

I will post an update to the actual blanket at the end of the month, early February at the latest. I will be featuring the next polish that I chose to wear on this blog in the next couple days. Have a good weekend!
